Mustang, Challenger, or Camaro? Choose Your Pick!

Which car do you think tops the muscle car category? Here are my opinions on each car, and why I chose them in this order.

1. 2010 Chevrolet Camaro

This car is just HOT!!!!!  I mean look at it; that’s one bad-ass looking car.  It is THE new hotness in the muscle/sports car world currently. There even hard to come by. The whole body looks nice and, there’s hardly any flaws in the design, if any (except for the blind spots people have been complaining about). But even with the bigger blinds spots, I’d still buy this car. It will have you turning your head around in your seat as you drive by it (if it’s parked, that its). It’s been known to cause crashes; people keep staring at them when they see it on the street and not paying attention to what’s in front of them.

In terms of the interior, it’s not too bad.  Personally, I’m not really a fan of the retro dashboard.  I’d rather have a more modern looking one.  I would also change the steering wheel, and DEFINITELY the gear shift knob.  It looks like crap.  If there was one thing I could change in the car and make it standard, it would definitely be the gear shift knob.  Other than those minor flaws I believe it has, the interior is pretty nice.

And for you Transformers fans, you can even add in the Transformers package!  How cool is that.  It also has optional LED halo rings that look pretty cool, and just to make a reference from the HALO game, it reminds me of Guilty Spark.

The 4 auxillary gauges (which measures the oil temperature, oil pressure, battery voltage, and [I think] engine temperature) that comes standard in the 2LT and 2SS models are in the center console. That’s one feature the other two cars don’t have, it makes the car feel like a race car to me. However, I don’t know why it doesn’t come standard in the 1SS model.

And I should I even talk about the V6 and V8 engines? The 3.6 liter V6 produces 304 horsepower, which is pretty dam good. The only V6 I know that produces more horsepower is in Ford’s 2011 Mustang, which can make 305.  To me, a 1 horsepower difference doesn’t mean a thing, and plus, it didn’t even come out yet. Its 6.2 liter V8 however, makes 426 horses.  Now that’s a beast.

2. 2010 Ford Mustang

The new mustang (2010 version) is pretty nice.  There were a few changes in the exterior that I’m sure car fans will notice easily.  It looks shorter, but is actually the same height.  And I’m glad they changed the grill, because I felt the 2009 grill was a bit too big.  My friend called it a truck.  So, I don’t really have any complaints about the body design since they fixed the problems I thought it had, except that by doing that, they made it a bit feminine-looking.  There’s nothing wrong with that though, but I’m just saying…

The interior I’ll say does look better than the Camaro.  Better looking dashboard (but not passenger dash, it’s all plastic, not leather like the Camaro), and the center console looks better.  Their standard gear shift knob (yes, the gear shift knob is important to me, I like manual transmission, so all you wussy automatics can take a hyke  j/k) doesn’t really appeal to me, but the one that comes in the GT premium model is much nicer than the one in the camaro.  you should see the older shifter knob; it looked like crap, it looked like a plastic toy.  Now you get an aluminum one with the premium model. So I’ll give the interior to the Mustang, but by a slight margin.

As for its engines, well, there really isn’t much to talk about. I’m serious, there really isn’t much. I hate to even talk about it, but since I’m comparing engines, I should. So here goes: its 4.0 liter V6 (bigger than the Camaro’s engine) puts out 210 horsepower (94 horses less).  That is despicable. My dad’s Toyota’s V6 has more horsepower than that. I’m sorry, but that is just atrocious, utterly unacceptable.  Its 4.6 liter V8 makes 315 horses.  This is also pathetic for a muscle car, not too mention the small V8. What’s a V8 doing being only 4.6 liter!!! COME ON!!!! Now I’ve told people that “if I were to get a muscle car, I would get the V6 version cuz it has enough horsepower, and it’s not like i’m gonna race the car anyway. And plus, it saves gas”. But then, they’ll come back at me and say “why would you get a V6 when a V8 is better? I don’t go for second best. And who cares about gas if you have a muscle car.” Well tell me this now, would consider getting the Mustang with their “best” engine making a measly 315 hp V8 over another muscle car with a V8 that produces over 400 horses? Thank you very much.  I guess now we know why they need Shelby to soup-up this car of theres.

3. 2010 Dodge Challenger

Last on the list: the Dodge Challenger. So what can I say about this car.  It’s big and bulky. It got a lot fatter while it was gone. Nothing really different compared to the 2009 version. The exterior is nice though, so I’ll give it some credit.  But the interior looks very, very similar, almost identical, to the Charger’s interior. So you can basically say that the only newness is its exterior for this car.  It is the Charger 2-door coupe. In terms of engines, it’s 3.5 liter V6 model only produces 250 horses; NOHWERE near as powerful compared to the Camaro, but the Mustang’s V6 has only 210 Hp, and you already know what I think of that. It’s its 5.7 V8 produces 372 horses, and its 6.1 liter V8 makes 425 horeses . But then again, it’s all about what muscle cars are really about: Big engines!!! These are just the low end cars that the average person can get.

So let’s compare:  Camaro’s 6.2 liter V8: 426 Hp.  Mustang’s 4.6 liter V8 : 315 Hp (PATHETIC)(holy crap that’s a small engine.  What’s a V8 doing being only 4.6 liters!!???? COME ON!!!)

I just think both the Camaro and Mustang outdo this car. It’s a nice car, but not nice enough to beat #1 and #2. Sorry, Challenger fans.

By the Numbers:

0-60 mph:

V8 engines:

  • Camaro: 4.7 (4.5s has actually been recorded)
  • Mustang: 4.9 (very surprising for 315hp, but probably due to its lower weight. But still, I give it credit)
  • Challenger: 5.1

Fuel economy (based off manual transmissions):

  • Chevrolet Camaro: V6: 17/29, V8: 16/24
  • Ford Mustang: V6: 18/26, V8: 16/24
  • Dodge Challenger: V6: 17/25, V8: 15/24, V8: 14/22

Is this a trend? Camaro beats Mustang in sales for second straight month

Autoblog reports:

Last month we learned Chevy sold more Camaros in June than Ford did Mustangs. It’s like 1969 all over again. Now, we did state that, “as The General has a backlog of 10,000 sold orders to fill (equating to less than a seven day supply), the streak is likely to continue for at least the next few months.” But you know, with GM still being in the federal dog house and all that, plus with Ford being on the up and up, we wouldn’t have been shocked to see more ‘Stangs than ‘Maros moving off lots during July. Only once again, Chevy beat Ford in the pony car sales department.

That said, Chevy sold about 2,200 less Camaros (9,320 vs. 7,113) in July than they did June — and that’s with Cash for Clunkers running at full tilt. For their part, Ford sold about 1,000 fewer Mustangs (7,632 vs. 6,686) month-to-month. Drawn out on a long enough graph, and Ford will eventually sell more Mustangs. That’s if reading trends wasn’t just like reading tea leaves. As far as why the Camaro continues to outsell the Mustang, we’ll chalk that up to the Chevy’s newness. Once the General fulfills all of its backlogged orders, we’re thinking the Mustang is just too tough an opponent to continually beat. Even if they keep covering the Chevy in Transformers bunting. Either way, we’ll see you back here next month.

Which car do you think will win the muscle car battle overall? Which car would do you think looks better?

Comic-Con 2009: GM shows off Transformers Special Edition Camaro

2010 Chevrolet Camaro Transformers Special Edition – Click above for a high-res image gallery

Last but not least among this year’s Comic-Con rides: GM’s Transformers Special Edition Chevy Camaro. You likely remember the details, but in case you don”t, here’s a refresher: for around a thousand bucks, you get a bunch of Autobot and Transformers logos on your otherwise stock-trim machine. The only requirement is that the car needs to be Rally Yellow, for maximum Bumblebee effect. In case you were wondering, you can get pretty much the exact same car, sans all the movie tie-in pieces of flair, for $470 over sticker; that’s what plain black stripes cost when you order them alone. But you know, this is more collectible. Probably. Hit the gallery below for the shots Drew snapped of the V6 RS with the factory Bumblebee package at Comic-Con this weekend.
